The major functions of the Children's Hospital are an outpatient specialty center, dedicated pediatric surgical rooms and recovery, a neo-natal intensive care unit, a 16-bed pediatric intensive care unit, a 22-bed pediatric inpatient unit and support areas including play rooms, teen rooms, treatment rooms, hospitality suites, waiting rooms and a prayer chapel.

The central goal of this project was to create a Children's Hospital for the community by renovating space in an existing Medical Center. The "family centered" health care concept, emphasizing the role of parents and siblings in the healing process, was to be a major design theme. Another major consideration was the "hospital within a hospital" concept, addressing a growing trend in health care throughout the country to reclaim existing underutilized and institutional styled patient rooms and replace them with new, modern, specialized space & the latest technology. The main emphasis was to develop design concepts that deliver spaces with state of the art technology created specifically for the comfort and fun for kids and support of their families.
